Hurricane Katrina,pictures of the Pascagoula Area.The Destruction and Rebuilding : Hurricane Katrina was the costliest,and one of the deadliest Storms in U.S.History,with close to 200 billion dollars worth of damage,and 1,836 deaths,705 Missing.19 in Jackson County,and around 209 in Mississippi.The winds jumped from category three to five status in nine hours over the warm water of the Gulf of Mexico,and reached its peak with 175 mph sustained,gusts reaching 217 mph.,and pressure at 902mbar.The storm weakened to category three status after an eyewall replacement cycle disrupted the intensity,but the storm nearly doubled in size.Hurricane force winds reached 120 miles outward from the eye.The storm lost hurricane strength when the Eye reached 150 miles inland near Meridian,Ms,and downgraded to tropical depression status near Clarksville,Tn.The remnants were distinguishable up in the Great Lakes region,and affected Eastern Canada.I was here,in Pascagoula when Katrina hit.We had to flee our home and go next door to our neighbors 2 story house and break their door down to reach higher ground.We watched our house,cars,and other things being destroyed.We had 59 percent damage to our house,but we are rebuilding.The depth of the water here(14 feet above sea level)was between 4-5 feet.If you have any questions,please ask.Thanks to everyone who helped the good people of Pascagoula,and others in Mississippi.If you worked down here and want to see what a house or other building looks like now,let me know the name or address and I will try to put a photo on here.Thanks,Alan Hinkel.Update:30 Houses on Beach Blvd.,21 Inhabitable,9 Under Construction.09 October 2008

Hurricane Katrina,pictures of the Pascagoula Area.The Destruction and Rebuilding

The Pascagoula Run : Jimmy Buffett sang a song about his birthplace,and his uncle Billy,called the Pascagoula Run.Pascagoula is an industrial,and a "Sleepy little Town"as described by Ray Stevens in his Song"The Mississippi Squirell Revival".The city made it's major motion picture debut in 1999 in the Micheal Mann movie "The Insider"with Al Pacino,Russell Crowe,and Christopher Plummer about Big Tobacco.The City has the East and West Pascagoula River,also known as the "Singing River".The Legend of the River is World Famous,with it's mysterious music.The singing sounds like a swarm of bees heard in late evenings during late summer,and autumn.Barely heard at first the music seems to grow nearer,and louder until it sounds as though it comes directly under foot.An old Indian legend connects the sound with the mysterious extinction of the Pascagoula Indians.Pascagoula means "Bread Eaters".The Pascagoula were a gentle tribe of contended innocent,inoffensive people,while the Biloxi were a tribe who considered themselves the "First People",and were enemies of the Pascagoula.Anola,a princess of the Biloxi Braves was in love with Altama,chief of the Pascagoula.Anola was betrothed to a chieftan of her own tribe,but fled to Altama.The sporned and enraged Biloxi chieftan led his Braves against Altama and the neighboring Pascagoula.The Pascagoula swore they would either save the young chief and his bride or perish with them.When thrown into battle the Pascagoula were outnumbered and faced with enslavement by the Biloxi tribe or death.With their women and children leading the way,the Pascagoula joined hands and began to chant a song of death as they walked into the river until the last voice was hushed by the dark engulfing waters.Many believe the modern day sound is that of the death song of the Pascagoula tribe.Various hypothetical scientific explanations have been offered for this phenomenon,but none have been proven.

Car Wrecks : My brothers car wreck on the 20th of August 1991,He passed away on February 28th,1998 as a result of injuries recieved in this car Wreck,and Troy Mathis is to blame.No One else.Hopefully one day I can forgive him.Please Respect these images,and don't copy them.I just want to share these with people to raise awareness.This wreck,not accident,or incident happened on Beach Boulevard in Pascagoula,MS.The speed limit is 25 MPH.The Mathis car was travelling around 80 MPH.There was no alcohol or drugs involved.The driver of the other car(Mathis)had just gotten out of school(High School)when this occured.I think he was probably showing off for the 2 friends that were passengers when the wreck happened.My brother was alone,and was coming home after a dental exam and stopping to get lunch at Edd's Drive Inn.

Chevron,and other Refineries : Smoke and Flames billow from behind a tank,that bears the Chevron Name,and Logo,after a fire broke out in the crude two unit of the largest Chevron refinery in the U.S.in Pascagoula,Mississippi on the 16th of August 2007.The fire spewed crude oil into the air and landed on cars,boats,and homes over parts of the Pascagoula area.The good people at Chevron did an efficient,and generous job paying for the vehicles to be cleaned.The Refinery is about to undergo a 550 Million Dollar Expansion which will greatly increase the amount of Gasoline,and other gases refined at the Pascagoula Refinery.This unit will be called the CCR,or Continuous Catalyst Regenerator Unit.The Refinery is also going to expand the PBOP unit or Pascagoula Base Oil Project.New photos of the 2008 Annual Chevron Picnic 01 November 2008.
